After the end of the Second World War the damaged and unusable carriages from the events of the war were sorely missed in passenger travel. At the beginning of 1949 new steel compartments were built on existing under carriages in the ribbed style to alleviate the problem. Over 2200 carriages in more than 100 various designs were produced by the main ÖBB works. 90% of the carriages were built with open platforms and there were also closed carriages for long haul passenger trains and express trains. Some ribbed wagons were used as trailers for engines and painted ultramarine blue/ivory, while all others were painted fir green. Over a period of time the carriages were adapted many times, for example the wooden seats were replaced with cushioned seats and from 1957 half windows were installed. In 1964 these carriages with two axles were taken out of service. Several functioning carriages still to be found in museums reming us of the former backbone of the regional passenger services.
