As the successor of the famous Austrian constructor of steam engines, Karl Gölsdorf , who built the Series 170 of engines pulling tenders with the wheel base 1`D, Dipl. Ing. Rihosek developed the more powerful hot steam variant. In 1917 seven engines of the 270 Series were delivered to the KkStB. The 270 series provided 1400 PS and could pull medium weight freight trains over the Arlberg. In 1920 after the First World War the assembly of further engines was begun. In total 235 of these powerful machines were built. After the Second World War a further 25 machines went into the service of the ÖBB as Series 156. In 1968 the last 14 engines were removed from service.
